The aircraft can be outfitted with a range of modern systems, sensors and weapons that enable it to perform a variety of missions, such as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, escort missions, ground strikes and special-operations support.” – Kristjan Kormayer
ABU DHABI, UAE – On January 15, The National—UAE quoted Avascent’s Kristjan Kornmayer regarding the UAE’s choice to purchase 24 Brazilian Super Tuscano turboprop aircraft. Emirati forces plan to use the planes for counter-insurgency operations. “They’re less prone to mechanical issues and much easier to maintain than highly sophisticated jets…they also cost much less to operate and can operate from semi-prepared or unpaved runways, which makes them a valuable asset in expeditionary operations.”
Given these benefits, the Super Tuscanos are to be preferred over fighter jets, i.e. F-16s due to their maneuverability and reconnaissance capabilities. In addition, these commercial aircraft can operate for longs periods of time between refueling, and be fitted with up to 1,500kg of weapons.
