What’s in the 2017 Appropriations Bill?

A significant boost from Congress to the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) account gave the Defense Department a 3.8% year-over-year increase in topline spending in the recently announced FY2017 Appropriations Bill. While lawmakers averted a federal government shutdown, the budget details reflect the current difficulties of Congressional politics ahead of the Trump Administration’s FY2018 budget request expected later this month. In this week’s podcast, Avascent Managing Director Doug Berenson explains that while it’s not all smooth sailing for the defense budget, the operations and maintenance (O&M) budget increase will help close the US military’s readiness gaps.
