Accountable Care Organizations

Among the provisions in the Affordable Care Act, the creation of Accountable
Care Organizations (ACOs) stands out as having perhaps the greatest potential
for transforming the healthcare industry. Section 3022 of the Affordable Care
Act creates a Medicare Shared Savings Program under the structure of an
ACO, which offers incentives for physicians, hospitals and insurers to work
together to deliver better patient care at lower costs. Advanced healthcare
information technology will be key to delivering on this promise
