Weekly Wire – Week of 5/4/2015
On April 30, 2015, Qatar announced the selection of the Dassault Rafale as the winner of their long standing multi-role fighter competition. At approximately €6.3 billion ($7.1b), the contract includes 24 fighters, and an undisclosed number of missiles (provided by MBDA) with associated training and services. The sale boosts the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) amid heightened regional tension. While unsurprising, the announcement brings years of speculation to an end and further cements Dassault’s presence in the Gulf. For the French defense export industry, the Qatar contract means it has sold more than €15 billion worth of arms this year—including 84 Rafales. Dassault is also eyeing the UAE’s multi-role fighter competition, though the effect of their win in Qatar is undetermined.
