Lunar Gateway Utilization: Mission Contribution Study Workshop and Questionnaire

Avascent has been retained by the Government of Canada to conduct research and analysis in support of the Canadian Space Agency’s (CSA) planning and options analysis for Canada’s future utilization of the Lunar Gateway. The Lunar Gateway involves the International Space Station (ISS) partners (NASA, ESA, JAXA and CSA – referred to as the Gateway Partners) in a new venture to construct and operate a human-tended outpost in Lunar orbit.

In the coming weeks, Avascent and the CSA will host a virtual information workshop designed to equip stakeholders with early information as to opportunities and constraints associated with Gateway utilization in the Canadian context. In addition, this workshop provides an opportunity for the CSA to outline the different criteria that will guide their planning and options analysis in selecting and supporting initiatives for Gateway. This information session will also allow the CSA to gather feedback on the types of research activities and technology contributions that industry and academia may be interested in providing in support of the Canadian utilization of the Lunar Gateway.

Canada’s contribution of the Gateway External Robotics System (Canadarm3) has secured Canada Partner rights to its utilization. From a Canadian utilization perspective, the Lunar Gateway will be a science laboratory that provides opportunities for fundamental space research and a testbed for new technologies. The Gateway Partners have prioritized the following areas:

Heliophysics and Space Weather
Human Health
Technology & Materials
Space Biology & Life Sciences
Astrophysics and Fundamental Physics
Lunar And Planetary Sciences
Education & Outreach
Multi-Discipline Enabling Technologies for Space Exploration

Avascent will establish a questionnaire that provides an opportunity for participants and all those interested in the Lunar Gateway to share written feedback for the CSA’s consideration. We will provide more information on this initiative as it becomes available.

Utilisation de la passerelle lunaire Gateway: Étude de contribution à la mission Atelier et Questionnaire

Avascent a été retenue par le gouvernement du Canada pour effectuer des recherches et des analyses en appui à la planification et l’analyse d’options de l’Agence spatiale canadienne (ASC) concernant l’utilisation de la future Passerelle lunaire par le Canada. Cette Passerelle lunaire implique les partenaires de la Station spatiale internationale (SSI) (NASA, ESA, JAXA et CSA – appelés les partenaires du Gateway) dans une nouvelle initiative de construction et d’exploitation d’un avant-poste habité par l’homme en orbite lunaire.

Au cours des prochaines semaines, Avascent et l’ASC organiseront un atelier d’information virtuel conçu pour fournir aux parties prenantes des informations précoces sur les opportunités et les contraintes associées à l’utilisation de la passerelle dans le contexte canadien. De plus, cet atelier donnera l’occasion à l’ASC de décrire les différents critères qui guideront leur planification et analyse d’options dans la sélection et le support d’initiatives pour Gateway. Cette séance d’information permettra également à l’ASC de recueillir des commentaires sur les types d’activités de recherche et les contributions technologiques que l’industrie et le milieu universitaire pourraient être intéressés à soutenir en appui à l’utilisation canadienne de Gateway.

La contribution du Canada, le système de robotique externe de la Passerelle lunaire (Canadarm3), en a garanti les droits d’utilisation au Canada en tant que partenaire. Du point de vue de son utilisation par le Canada, la Passerelle lunaire sera un laboratoire scientifique qui offrira des possibilités de recherche fondamentale et un banc d’essai pour les nouvelles technologies. Les partenaires du Gateway ont priorisé les domaines suivants:

Héliophysique et météo spatiale
Santé humaine
Technologie et matériaux
Biologie spatiale et Sciences de la vie
Astrophysique et Physique fondamentale
Sciences lunaires et planétaires
Éducation et Sensibilisation
Technologies multidisciplinaires pour l’exploration spatiale

Avascent produira un questionnaire qui permettra aux participants à l’atelier et à toute personne intéressée par Gateway de partager leurs commentaires destinés à l’ASC par écrit. Nous fournirons plus d’information sur cette initiative dès qu’elle sera disponible.
